Consumerism and Gender Roles in America: A Word to the Wives (1955)

Consumerism is a social and economic order that is based on the systematic creation and fostering of a desire to purchase goods or services in ever greater amounts. The term is often associated with criticisms of consumption starting with Thorstein Veblen or, more recently by a movement called Enoughism. Veblen’s subject of examination, the newly emergent middle class arising at the turn of the twentieth century, comes to full fruition by the end of the twentieth century through the process of globalization. The term “consumerism” is also used to refer to the consumerist movement or consumer activism, which seeks to protect and inform consumers by requiring such practices as honest packaging and advertising, product guarantees, and improved safety standards. In this sense it is a movement or a set of policies aimed at regulating the products, services, methods, and standards of manufacturers, sellers, and advertisers in the interests of the buyer. In economics, consumerism refers to economic policies placing emphasis on consumption. In an abstract sense, it is the belief that the free choice of consumers should dictate the economic structure of a society (cf. Producerism, especially in the British sense of the term). The term “consumerism” was first used in 1915 to refer to “advocacy of the rights and interests of consumers” (Oxford English Dictionary) but in this article the term “consumerism” refers to the sense first used in 1960, “emphasis on or preoccupation with the

KP Debate Q2

2)What new events would you like to initiate and which would you think about discontinuing? a.Camille: What new events I would initiate: wouldnt really initiate a brand new event because we plan a lot of events and if we add another one it would be burn-out but Im open to new events chosen as a collective, like if CORE comes really strong with a new event then I support it, but I dont have anything in mind at this moment and completely open to new ideas because KP is continuously changing and were not set in what we do next year as long as its backed with good planning. Events I would discontinue, I dont know but personally I dont like Friendship Games however I dont know if it falls within our mission statement as a social space, but we can do with or without Friendship Games. Magkasamathat event can be ever-changing but with established events we have to go back and think why we have those events in the first place because how Magkasama started isnt how Magkasama went down this year. b.Angie: I second what Camille said about stepping back and wondering why an event started. As far as current events to be discontinued, thats something to be spoken about as a collective. As far as new events, I like planning new events, maybe thats the RA in me, I think its a good chance to explore other options, like this recent RA event called Life that was like the board game Life with the . Took class last year about inequality in education. If people have the passion for the event

Public Safety Forum – Testimony – Oct 12, 2011.wmv

In an effort to highlight the progress that Fall River has been making in addressing public safety issues, Senator Michael Rodrigues hosted a Public Safety Forum on October 12, 2011 at the Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center on Martine Street in Fall River. Prior to attending the evening Forum, officials from the Executive Office of Human Services and the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security were transported to the Department of Children and Families, the Youth Connection job center, Community Development Recreation, the Fall River Police Department and the Boys and Girls Club to learn first-hand about the many programs that help to prevent violence and the conditions that foster illegal behavior. The public was then invited to hear from officials and to ask questions relative to their concerns about public safety. The Fall River legislative delegation organized the forum to communicate to the citizens of greater Fall River how important state and city partnerships are in fostering effective community relationships, promoting environments of collective responsibility and making Fall River a safer place to live, work and raise a family. The video is a moving testimony about the influence of gangs and the power of local programs to make a difference in the life of 18 year old Michael Nehm. New York City is Dance Music

NEW YORK CITY’S LEGENDARY DANCE MUSIC STATION. Pulse 87 is credited as being the first station in the country to introduce Lady Gaga and to play Kid Cudi’s “DAY n NIGHT” (Crookers Remix) and the UK dance music sensation Sophia May. Sydney Devon (former Vice President of Promotions) created a niche for PULSE 87 by solidifying partnerships with New York’s most prominent club owners and producers of the longest-running, biggest and most revered outdoor festival in the New York City. It was the strategic participation at NYC’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and the nationally televised Macy’s Day Parade which catapulted the station into fostering the strong and loyal fan base for the Pulse 87. On air personalities and Mix show Dj’s from PULSE 87 were some of the most respected names in the world of House music and Dance Music. Dj’s such as Jonathan Peters, Glenn Friscia, David Guetta, Dj YONNY (now on 92.3fm NYC), Showboat, Jules Lopes, Laura Stylez and the infamous STAR & Buc Wild morning show made a quick and huge connection within the tri-state area.

Adoption of an orphan/helpless child was a very popular and moral practice amongst pre-Islamic Arabs. By adopting an orphan, they used to consider the adopted child as their own and pass on the adopter’s family association and name, inheritance, and the prohibition of marriage to relatives of close connection even though they were not blood relatives. Islam’s Influence: Muhammad forbade the Arab practice of adopting children as one’s own. Islam removes all the adopted son’s actual rights (his name, inheritance, property, right to be considered as a part of the family). One can care for an orphan in fostering capcity, but it is considered as an act of kindness and not real family and there can never be any legal relationship. At the time of this ruling, a verse was revealed: “God did not make your adopted son as your own sons. To declare them so is your empty claim. God’s word is righteous and constitutes true guidance.” Qur’an 33 4 Some Islamic states have taken this narrowly, and are not even permitted to foster a child in the home. Other states, such as Egypt permit fostering in the home, but the parents are forced to evict the child at the first sign of puberty (as a part of Islam’s sex-paranoid culture of gender apartheid where all females everywhere are not permitted to interact in any social capacity whatsoever with anyone who is not of the same sex, unless they are family.) So the 13 year old teens and tweens get put on the street or sent to an orphanage mill, or

Finding God through facebook

Full video vimeo.com or www.blip.tv or media.newhopechurch.ca In this message we’re going to seek out God’s face via facebook. “There is a force capable of synchronizing a large population in very little time, thereby creating spontaneous order” Jesse Rice, The Church of facebook “If you think of the kind of things we revere, whether its justice or love or altruism, those things are fundamentally social — they have to do with interactions with others. So there’s a very deep and fundamental connection between social networks and goodness.” Nicholas Christakis, Physician and social scientist at Harvard. From Report on Business, p 60, March 2011 “Authentic connection is described as the core of psychological wellbeing and is the essential quality of growth-fostering and healing relationships. In moments of deep connection in relationship, we break out of isolation and contraction into a more whole and spacious state of mind and heart.” Psychologist Janet L. Surrey, The Church of facebook, p28 “My prayer is not for them [his disciples] alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even
