My name is Alexandra Pinschmidt, and I am the filmmaker behind “Radical Love” – a documentary about a 40-year old non-profit organization in Boston and its personal approaches to addressing societal inequality. Haley House is a “radical” organization, in that it “gets to the root of” so many overwhelming social issues. Its programs address poverty and marginalization from a number of different strategies and levels, including: a soup kitchen, a socially responsible café and bakery training program, over 100 affordable housing units, and an organic farm outside the city. This documentary film will artistically and personally delve into issues of homelessness, marginalization, and economic inequality. The documentary will also focus on productive ways of engaging these issues, through economic and social empowerment, fostering personal relationships and community, and challenging our own beliefs and oppressive structures in society. The creation of the documentary will in itself mirror the community-based ethos of Haley House; it is a participatory project that engages the entire Haley House community, from the directors and staff, to the guests in the soup kitchen. The poetry, artwork, and music is all created or performed by people associated with Haley House, and Bostonian street musicians. Consumerism is a social and economic order that is based on the systematic creation and fostering of a desire to purchase goods or services in ever greater amounts. In an effort to highlight the progress that Fall River has been making in addressing public safety issues, Senator Michael Rodrigues hosted a Public Safety Forum on October 12, 2011 at the Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center on Martine Street in Fall River. Prior to attending the evening Forum, officials from the Executive Office of Human Services and the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security were transported to the Department of Children and Families, the Youth Connection job center, Community Development Recreation, the Fall River Police Department and the Boys and Girls Club to learn first-hand about the many programs that help to prevent violence and the conditions that foster illegal behavior. The public was then invited to hear from officials and to ask questions relative to their concerns about public safety. The Fall River legislative delegation organized the forum to communicate to the citizens of greater Fall River how important state and city partnerships are in fostering effective community relationships, promoting environments of collective responsibility and making Fall River a safer place to live, work and raise a family. By adopting an orphan, they used to consider the adopted child as their own and pass on the adopter’s family association and name, inheritance, and the prohibition of marriage to relatives of close connection even though they were not blood relatives. Islam’s Influence: Muhammad forbade the Arab practice of adopting children as one’s own. Islam removes all the adopted son’s actual rights (his name, inheritance, property, right to be considered as a part of the family). One can care for an orphan in fostering capcity, but it is considered as an act of kindness and not real family and there can never be any legal relationship.
