From Bedroom to Battlefield: Designing for the Body

The human body poses a unique design challenge, particularly for industries that address its sensitivity. As examples, the design of sexual accessories and that of military armor provide interesting counterpoints in their relationship to the self. Both address the body’s vulnerabilities — one indulging them, the other shielding. Both explore the relationship between perception and confidence — one fostering a feeling of sensuality, the other of security. From design and business perspectives, these categories have long been neglected. On March 15, 2007, frog hosted a discussion about the particular relevance of design in the businesses of the body, bringing together Ethan Imboden of Jimmyjane, the industry leader in stylish, innovative sexual accessories, and Caleb Crye of Crye Associates, the design company behind the body armor of the US Army and others. The talk examined the speakers’ design inspirations, business challenges, and product development processes, as well as the mind-body connection and the role their products play in the identities of the individual users.

TEDxTokyo yz – Miori Oka – When We Believe in Youths

Miori Oka Miori is the Program Manager of Ashoka’s Youth Venture Japan. She graduated from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2008 with a Master of Education in Risk & Prevention. Miori has worked with youths in various capacities: as a social worker, a teacher, a researcher, and a program manager. She has worked particularly with immigrant youths, incarcerated youths, and youths in foster care. Prior to Ashoka, Miori worked at the Bank of Japan and two nonprofit organizations. At the Association for Aid and Relief Japan, Miori helped develop and manage the Landmine Risk Education Program in Afghanistan. At Multicultural Center Tokyo, she ran the Tabunka Free School for immigrant teens who cannot attend school because of their age or the language barrier. Miori’s passion lies in spotting potential in youths and fostering their motivation, growth, and capacity for change. Oka Miori believes that youths are masters of relations building, which is critical in any social movements. She shares her experience, as a teacher, of how youth on the contrary taught and trained her. Maria, a 16 year old in Boston, taught her just to listen in stead of trying to solve Maria’s problems. The 3rd and 4th graders in the Capital City Public Charter school in Washington DC taught her how not to treat anyone like a kid. And, Roger in the Bunka Free School taught her how to focus on one’s positives in stead of just trying to help. Youth told Oka Miori of what is important in building

Radical Love: the Haley House documentary – TRAILER

My name is Alexandra Pinschmidt, and I am the filmmaker behind “Radical Love” – a documentary about a 40-year old non-profit organization in Boston and its personal approaches to addressing societal inequality. Haley House is a “radical” organization, in that it “gets to the root of” so many overwhelming social issues. Its programs address poverty and marginalization from a number of different strategies and levels, including: a soup kitchen, a socially responsible cafĂ© and bakery training program, over 100 affordable housing units, and an organic farm outside the city. This documentary film will artistically and personally delve into issues of homelessness, marginalization, and economic inequality. The documentary will also focus on productive ways of engaging these issues, through economic and social empowerment, fostering personal relationships and community, and challenging our own beliefs and oppressive structures in society. The creation of the documentary will in itself mirror the community-based ethos of Haley House; it is a participatory project that engages the entire Haley House community, from the directors and staff, to the guests in the soup kitchen. The poetry, artwork, and music is all created or performed by people associated with Haley House, and Bostonian street musicians. The documentary will also have strong artistic undercurrents of urban and natural motifs, which evoke the outdoor aspects of being homeless. Haley House’s story is also important to
